End of Microsoft Office Support on Remote Desktop

Do you have an on-premises Remote Desktop environment?

Or perhaps you have Remote Desktop Services in your IT Company’s private cloud?

Maybe you’re coming up towards an infrastructure refresh deadline?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, here is some critical information you’ll need to know:

Microsoft is dropping support for Office 365 apps on Remote Desktop as follows:

  • RDS using Server 2019 – Support ends October 2025 – can be extended with Office LTSC licensing until October 2026. This is additional licensing per person with significant costs and only extends support for 1 year.
  • RDS using Server 2022 – Support ends October 2026 – no option to extend support.

This is likely to have a significant impact on customers who rely on Remote Desktop to access their applications & data, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a surge in remote working.

While this move may cause concern among organizations that rely on Remote Desktop Services – either through an on-premise solution of private cloud – it highlights the importance of modernizing desktop infrastructure.

There are many organizations that continue to rely on legacy desktop environments, and they may be at risk of security vulnerabilities, data breaches, and poor performance. By transitioning to more modern desktop infrastructure, organizations can enjoy better security, improved performance, and greater flexibility with scale.

Where to from here?

These deadlines are fast approaching, particularly if you are considering committing to a new on-prem solution or a new/extended private cloud contract in the near future.

There are several options available to organizations that wish to modernize their desktop infrastructure. One option is to move to a cloud-based solution, such as Azure Virtual Desktop.

This offers a wide range of benefits, including improved security, enhanced collaboration and communication, and greater flexibility with scale.
